Hotels in Amsterdam that are members of the Green Hotel Club show that there are many ways to make an impact with water. Together with Made Blue Foundation, they provide clean drinking water in areas facing water scarcity. As a result, over 950 people will be gaining access to clean drinking water for at least 10 years, amounting to more than 70 million litres, a better health and a brighter future.
The principle is simple: hotels invite guests to be more mindful of their water use during their stay. They can do this by taking slightly shorter showers, skipping a room clean, or choosing locally tapped water from Made Blue Foundation. This can help ease the pressure on local freshwater sources and reduce single-use packaging.
It also saves hotels water and energy, and lowers the transport and purchasing costs of pre-packaged water. They then turn part of these savings into donations, which Made Blue Foundation uses to provide clean drinking water to people elsewhere in the world who urgently need it. In this way, these hotels achieve two things at once: they make an impact close to home and far away. Here’s a closer look at the Amsterdam participants.

Hotel Casa Amsterdam: 100 liter per room per night
At Hotel Casa Amsterdam, every overnight stay makes an impact. The hotel donates 100 litres of clean drinking water per room per night and shows guests exactly that: in the shower, one of the biggest sources of water use in any hotel. In a hotel, guests use up to two to three times as much water as they do at home. Without pointing fingers, the hotel subtly encourages guests to think about their water use, right where it makes the most difference.
Casa has a unique mix of guests. Alongside tourists staying a few nights, 360 students live in the hotel every year from October to May. The message works especially well for longer stays: when you’re reminded of the value of water every day, you become more mindful of how you use it. To date, Casa has donated for more than 33 million litres.
In doing so, Hotel Casa Amsterdam joins a growing group of hotels working with their guests to use water more mindfully. Research by Made Blue among nine participating hotels found that water use per guest was 7.5% lower than in the previous year.

Made Blue in the lobby, fully customisable
Leonardo Hotels: from the lobby to a view from the 17th floor
All three Leonardo hotels in Amsterdam started by donating for every bottle of water ordered in the restaurant, served in refillable glass bottles from Made Blue Foundation. Switching to locally bottled water with Made Blue has many benefits. A glass bottle not only reduces single-use packaging and unnecessary emissions from transporting pre-packaged water, but every order also provides a litre of clean drinking water in a water-scarce area.
Anyone walking into the lobby will now also find a Made Blue water tap where guests can refill their bottle. Refillable Made Blue bottles are available in the lobby shop and, just like every order in the restaurant, contribute to clean drinking water elsewhere.
From the entrance to the table overlooking the city from the 17th floor, Made Blue is part of the experience. The partnership with Leonardo Hotel Amsterdam Rembrandtpark has already generated more than 13.7 million litres.

The Albus en Senses Restaurant: every glass counts
At The Albus Hotel, the impact is all about what’s on the table too. In its restaurant, Senses, water is served in Made Blue glassware, and every order contributes to clean drinking water elsewhere. That way, every bottle and every glass a guest drinks helps deliver water to someone else. The glassware was custom-designed in close collaboration with the team at The Albus to fit seamlessly with the restaurant’s own brand identity.
The result is a bottle that suits the setting. Senses is an intimate fine-dining restaurant where culinary craftsmanship and sustainability come together. From the open kitchen, guests can see their dishes being created. In such a carefully curated guest experience, design is never an afterthought, which is why the glassware feels like a natural part of the table.
The glassware and the menu make the partnership and the donation visible during the guest experience, right there on the table. To date, The Albus has donated more than 23.4 million litres of clean drinking water: enough to give 321 people access to clean water for at least 10 years.

NYX Hotel Amsterdam Rembrandt Square: the newest addition
NYX Hotel Amsterdam Rembrandt Square is the newest participant. The hotel has opted for a combination of measures, expected to provide 4 million litres of clean drinking water per year.
The hotel has a Made Blue refill point in the lobby and sells reusable Made Blue bottles with a donation included. That way, guests don’t just take home a souvenir, they also contribute directly to clean drinking water. In addition, every bottle of water sold in its restaurant contributes too.
“I’ve been working with Made Blue Foundation for years, in different roles and at different hotels. Time and again, water proves to be an accessible way to make a difference. At NYX Hotel Amsterdam Rembrandt Square, we’ve taken it a step further with refillable bottles designed in NYX style. Guests can refill the bottle at our water taps and take it home with them. That gives them a practical and beautiful bottle that lasts a long time. It also contributes to clean drinking water for communities that don’t have access to it. Together, we have now made almost 2 million litres of clean drinking water possible. And we’re far from done.” – Jorik Heus, Hotel Manager
Hotels with a shared mission
Whether it’s a message in the shower, a refill point in the lobby or a bottle on the table: these hotels show how you can make an impact, close to home and far away, in a way that guests can see and experience.
The strength lies in the combination: using water more mindfully, using fewer single-use bottles, and contributing to clean drinking water for people elsewhere in the world. In this way, the hotels connect their everyday hospitality to a shared mission: clean drinking water for all.
