2 new solar-powered water systems under construction
In total, this project works on seven water systems.
We’re constructing two new solar-powered water systems in Calaba Town and the Waterloo community. These systems will supply water to two schools and to water kiosks located in nearby community markets.
Five existing water systems are being rehabilitated and upgraded to operate as water kiosks.
Waterloo
At Grafton School for the Blind, 85% of the work has been completed. Installation of the tank, solar panels and pump is currently underway.
Calaba Town
At WMA School in Calaba Town, 25% of the work has been completed. Construction of the foundation and the water tower is well underway.
2 Water kiosks 75% completed
Water from the new school systems will be piped to two new water kiosks located at the markets in Kola Tree and Shell.
Both kiosks are 75% complete. Installation of the Grundfos AQtap dispensers will take place in the next quarter.
By placing water kiosks at local markets, market women, their customers and surrounding communities will finally gain access to safe water, reducing the risk of waterborne diseases.
Sanitation & hygiene
With this project we also aim to improve access to sanitation and hygiene.
VIP Latrine
At Mary Ash Primary School, we are upgrading the toilets. Two separate VIP latrine blocks are being constructed for boys and girls. Both will be accessible to students with disabilities. Construction is currently 65% complete.
In addition, hygiene education has been provided at 10 other schools, where hand washing stations have also been installed.
local ownership
In total, this project works on 7 water systems: 2 new systems and 5 existing ones — all of which are being upgraded with new water kiosks at strategic locations, mainly local markets.
- 2 new Water Management Committees: For the newly constructed water systems, water committees have been established and trained to coordinate daily management and basic maintenance.
- 3 Savings for Transformation (S4T) groups: The project also introduces the Savings for Transformation (S4T) approach to support income-generating activities, helping parents to better provide for their families. So far, 3 S4T groups have been formed.
Milk powder
With the support of Made Blue ambassadors Vreugdenhil Dairy Foods and Hoogwegt Group, we are addressing calcium deficiency among students by adding milk powder to school meals.
The first shipment of milk powder has already been safely stored and will be distributed once schools reopen in September 2025.
We are still waiting for two required documents before distribution can begin: registration with the Food and Drugs Authority and a license from the Consumer Protection Agency.
Freetown WASH & Milk
In Sierra Leone, we build and improve water systems for schools and markets in the poorest areas of Freetown. At schools, we take an extra step — with the help of dedicated Made Blue ambassadors — by addressing calcium deficiency among students.
