Discover the latest news from Freetown, where the construction of two new water systems has been completed.
1 November 2025

Two new solar-powered water systems completed.
With this project we’re constructing 2 new water systems and rehabilitating 5 existing ones, converting those into water kiosks.
The two new water systems in Calaba Town and Waterloo are now 100% completed. The water is distributed via storage tanks to two nearby schools: Grafton School for the Blind and Wellington Muslim Association School.
The water is also being routed to two markets where no clean drinking water or toilets were available before.
3 out 7 water kiosks completed
All water systems will receive a new water kiosk at a strategic location selected by the community, mainly at local markets.
Two water kiosks have been installed at the local markets in Kola Tree and Shell, and are now 100% completed.
A third water kiosk has been installed and completed near Mary Ash Primary School.

Sanitation & hygiene
With this project, we also aim to improve access to sanitation and hygiene.
Local ownership
In total, this project works on 7 water systems – 2 new and 5 existing ones. Two water committees are established for the new systems, while the 5 existing committees receive additional training.
- 5 water committees: For 5 of the 7 water systems, water committees have been trained to coordinate daily management and basic maintenance.
- Savings for Transformation (S4T) groups: Three S4T groups have now been established and have committed to selling hygiene products and milk powder at the water kiosks. The generated income will be used for the maintenance and repair of the kiosks, ensuring they can continue to operate sustainably.

Milk powder
Delivering milk powder to schools and kiosks has proven to be the biggest challenge so far.
The procurement of milk powder has been delayed, mainly due to the absence of required government documents. These documents are essential to complete the procurement process, and as a result, the time-line for this part of the project has been affected significantly.
In the coming period efforts will be focused on obtaining the required documentation.

Freetown WASH & Milk
In Sierra Leone we’re building and improving water systems for schools and markets in the poorest areas of Freetown. In schools we take an extra step with the support of dedicated Made Blue ambassadors — by addressing calcium deficiency among students.
