kick-off for clean drinking water in UGANDA
In January 2024, the first phase of the WASH, Learn & Share project officially kicked off. Over the next three years, we will continue working in the Bunyangabu and Kabarole districts to improve water, sanitation and hygiene in schools and surrounding communities. A solid foundation for long-term impact was laid this February: partner contracts have been signed and the first activities have begun.
Update: 08 April 2024

WASH, Learn & Share: Ambitions for 2024–2026
This new project builds on the results achieved in the WASH & Learn project (2021–2023) and focuses on three main objectives:
- Creating WASH schools with a healthy and safe learning environment
- Improving WASH facilities in communities, in alignment with school-based activities
- Establishing sustainable WASH services together with local governments and local entrepreneurs
Learning and innovation are cross-cutting themes throughout this project.

Simavi is grateful that the WASH & Learn programme can continue in Uganda, to build on the lessons from the WASH & Learn 3.0 programme. WASH & Learn 4.0 will continue to tackle the challenge of operation and maintenance of WASH facilities in schools through an innovation process. More attention will be on water infrastructure in the surrounding communities, as this is still a major challenge in Uganda (especially to access safe water close enough to people’s homes).

Kick-off: Learning Week in Fort Portal
From 12 to 16 February, the projects’ implementing partners gathered in Fort Portal for an intensive learning week.
During these sessions, topics such as monitoring, evaluation & learning (MEL), programme management, fundraising and communication were central.
In addition, the results of the WASH & Learn project (2021–2023) were shared with the district government of Bunyangabu.

Next steps – March to June 2024
In the coming months, the project will first focus on completing a baseline survey to accurately map the starting situation of all schools and communities. These results form the foundation for the next step: the start of implementation at six schools and in twelve surrounding communities.
In parallel, all partners are working together on a comprehensive implementation plan, detailing how effective communication, fundraising for maintenance, and a strong learning agenda will be ensured throughout the project. This agenda will support all stakeholders in jointly improving the WASH facilities.
