Why Made Blue helps in the fight against plastic soup
why we’re fighting ocean plastic
Did you know that most of the plastic waste floating in our oceans comes from just a few rivers in the world?
Rivers originating in developing regions in Africa and Asia carry the vast majority of plastic waste directly to the oceans.
By providing clean water to those who need it most, Made Blue helps eliminate plastic waste right at the source.
What is ocean plastic?
Greenpeace explains: every minute a truckload of plastic waste ends up in our oceans: 94% sinks to the bottom, 1% remains floating around and 5% washes to shores.
The uninhabited Henderson Island is one of the most desolate places on earth… but with about 671 pieces of plastic waste scattered around per square meter! The amount of plastic waste in our oceans is way beyond our imagination and with huge consequences:
Plastic waste yearly kills over 100,000 animals in the sea. 1 out of 3 sea turtles have plastic inside. Microplastics have been found in human feces and even kitchen salt!
Bottled water
In developing regions, bottled water is often sold in plastic bottles or plastic bags and in small quantities: this makes it affordable to those having to make a living with less than a Dollar a day.
When access to tap water is not available, cheap plastic bottled waters often are the best available option. That makes the lack of access to tap water one of the main sources of plastic waste pollution according to experts. This is the case in urban areas an so in about half of our projects.

How we make a difference
Together with many initiatives worldwide promoting saving water, supporting tap water use and with many NGO’s working along side Made Blue we fight ocean plastics.
With construction of deep wells, pipelines and public water fountains, we aim at making a difference for those living at the bottom of the pyramid and together fight against plastic soup.
Having realized over 8 billion litres of clean water in developing countries, we eliminated billions of plastic bottles and bags no longer being needed.

Also less CO2
When people have to rely on polluted water, they will boil it before use, often over an open fire, especially in remote areas. By making clean drinking water available, this is no longer necessary and therefore much less wood or coal is burned, which saves a lot of CO2 emissions and harmful smoke.
For example, the IRC calculated that a ceramic water filter produces 1.03 tons of CO2 per year per filter. Conservatively calculated with 10 users per filter and the UN figure that 1 person needs at least 20 liters of water per day, the filter is good for 73,000 liters per year. This means that 1 million liters of clean drinking water results in a CO2 saving of 13.74 tons. And this is the case in about half of our projects.
