We started supporting a relatively small project in the Kadapa District in India in September 2023. In this remote area, realising ten borewells in ten villages will greatly impact the lives of the inhabitants. Hardly five months have passed and the project is progressing at breakneck speed. Seven of the ten borewells have been built so far. Let’s take a closer look.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Drilling for water<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

First, an underground water source must be found to build a well. This can sometimes mean digging to a depth of 150 metres. The quality of the water is extensively checked and ultimately all the hard work results in a platform with a hand pump, where residents can get clean water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every water point is constructed at a distance of at least 30 metres from latrine buildings and any animal stables, to prevent possible water stream contamination. When determining the precise location, our project partner not only utilizes the knowledge of the trained and professional builders they hire but also consults the residents of the village itself. This ensures that the water point is placed in the best possible location.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Washing hands<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It may seem obvious to us that you keep yourself clean with soap and water, and that you should wash your hands regularly during the day. Still, it’s good to get a reminder of this every now and then. Think back to about four years ago, when the COVID pandemic was becoming more and more of a reality. We all discovered that we could wash our hands much more often and thoroughly to keep ourselves healthy. It is something you quickly take for granted and something you easily forget, whether you have a tap in every room in the house or share a pump with the entire village. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is why it’s so important that good hygiene is discussed clearly and openly when a new water point is installed in these types of remote areas. In this project, the entire village – men and women, young and old – is explained about the use of soap and how to recognise and prevent infectious diseases.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Small project, major impact<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Seven water pumps have now been installed in the Kadapa District. With every village hooked up to a water source, we receive an extensive update from our project partner SPREAWS. In the photos and videos, we see many cheerful faces of villagers of all ages. Although this is a small-scale project for us, the impact is no less large or important. Instant access to clean water has made a tangible difference in the lives of these communities. Now that they no longer have to spend most of the day collecting clean drinking water, children can spend their valuable time at school and women can safeguard their independence by working and earning an income. The last three wells of this project are now under construction, giving 1,165 families direct access to clean water in total. We will keep you posted on all further developments!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

BOREWELLS IN INDIA<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In cooperation with our local partner SPREAWS<\/a> we will drill wells for 10 villages in the Kadapa District<\/a>. These villages are located in rural and mountainous areas whose residents face significant socio-economic challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
